Temporary relaxation of working hours for student visa holders

 

International students who work in some industries can have their work limitation of 40 hours a fortnight waived.

 

Supermarkets

To keep shelves stocked in this time of high demand, the government has announced a temporary relaxation of the 40 hour a fortnight work limit for student visa holders who work in Australia’s major supermarkets.

All Coles, Woolworths and Aldi retailers have been given a​access to the temporary relaxation of working hours for student visa holders.

 

Aged Care

All aged care Approved Providers or Commonwealth funded aged care service providers that have been issued with a RACS ID or a NAPS ID have been given access to the temporary relaxation of working hours for student visa holders. These aged care providers should refer to the correspondence provided to them by the Department of Health for further details.​

 

Nursing

Student visa holders already enrolled in nursing can undertake work to help and support the health effort against COVID-19 as directed by health officials. We will not take any enforcement action regarding student nurses working in these circumstances.​

 

 

Employers​

​You will receive an acknowledgement receipt of your registration immediately. Once your application has been considered, you will be advised of the outcome via email. ​

 

Ensure your registration is filed where it is accessible by other employees. You may experience delays if you need to obtain a replacement copy.

 

Registrations will be considered in the order in which they are received. The Department will aim to advise those who are registered within 2 business days.

 

Employer registration for relaxation of enforcement of student visa working hours is not per individual student or capped.

 

The primary activity of the business must be the supply of groceries.

 

All work related to a supermarket is acceptable for example deli/seafood, checkouts and trolley collectors.

​​Student visa holders

Student visa holders do not need to apply. You should contact your employer.
